The Paradigm Shift eBooks Brought

Back in 2010, eBook sales in the UK were just limited to two percent. For the next year predictors estimated that sales would rise by measly one percent.  In seven years, since then, the statistics have changed drastically. eBooks make a substantial chunk of sales in published output, and we are not just talking about fiction and non-fiction. Books in every genre like educational, magazine and comics have seen a paradigm shift. The question is why so few people were able to predict the modification? Why did not every publisher, author, editor, and manager see how the world of reading would revolutionise?

The answer to it lies in Catastrophe Theory. The theory explains phenomena characterized by sudden shifts in behaviour arising from small changes in circumstances. An example better illustrates it – no person can predict that a bridge is going to collapse until it does. Why? Because the incidences that lead to it were too small to see. Now apply this to eBooks. Yes, we were cognisant of the changes occurring, but not aware that they would have such a significant impact until they did.
